About This Organization

Regular Head Start: Children in center-based sites meet four days per week, 3.5 hours per day, eat lunch or breakfast, and are provided nutritional snacks a.m. and p.m. Degreed teachers provide literacy, math, social development opportunities, music, art and many other developmentally appropriate activities that children love. Combination Head Start: some sites may offer a “combination” option of home visits and classroom center-based activities. For example, children may attend 3.5 hours per day for 3 days per week with additional activities planned for in-home.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply

Who Qualifies for Head Start? All families are encouraged to apply for a Head Start slot. Federal Head Start funds 184 preschool slots and State of Minnesota funds 33 Early Head Start slots. Families are enrolled based on those with the greatest need selected first. Most families who qualify are eligible because they fall within the federal poverty guidelines. Other influencing factors include children in foster care, children with disabilities, parents on SSI, teen parents ead Start and Early Head Start are comprehensive child development programs which serve children from birth to age 5, pregnant women and their families. How do I know if my family is eligible? The process begins with a call to the Head Start program in New York Mills, Minnesota.
