How to Apply for Head Start

HeadStartPrograms.org is an independent informational directory. We do not determine eligibility, accept official enrollment applications, or guarantee placement. Program details may change, so confirm application steps, eligibility requirements, hours, and availability directly with the local Head Start program. For the official federal locator, visit HeadStart.gov.

Applying in Five Steps

  1. Search for a nearby program. Use search by ZIP code or city, or browse by state.
  2. Contact the local program directly. Every listing includes phone and, when available, website information.
  3. Ask about eligibility, openings, documents, and waitlists. Requirements and availability vary by program and location.
  4. Submit official information only through the local program's own application process. This directory does not collect or process applications.
  5. Follow up directly with the program about your application status — this directory cannot check status on your behalf.
