About This Organization

Founded in 1964 as part of the War on Poverty, Head Start is the nation’s largest school early education program that promotes school readiness by enhancing social and cognitive development through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families. With a budget of $7 billion dollars a year, Head Start serves nearly one million low income (primarily three and four year) children each year.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply

Download and print the application in PDF format. Application in English & Spanish Bring the completed application and the following documents to the center nearest to your home to determine eligibility for our program: Proof of Income, such as W-2 forms, pay stubs, written statement from employer, unemployment statement, award letter for TANF, award letter for SSI, child support statement. This is a federally funded program, and there are income guidelines that determine eligibility. Child's Birth Certificate. Child must be a minimum of 3 years old by the school district's cut off date and cannot be kindergarten eligible. If you need any assistance getting the required information or completing the application please contact the center in your neighborhood. The phone numbers and addresses are listed on the right side of this page. At the center, a staff member will assist you in filling out the rest of the necessary forms to complete your application packet.
