About This Organization

DCPS provides additional Head Start comprehensive services to children attending pre-school and pre-kindergarten programs at all Title I schools, including family support services and assistance in accessing health, dental, and nutrition services.DCPS preschool and pre-kindergarten programs operate on the regular school system calendar for the length of a typical school day, and are free of cost to residents of the District of Columbia.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

Step 3: How do I apply for a seat?Between January 28 and February 28Submit an application for the DCPS Preschool / Pre-K / Head Start Lottery. Applications are accepted each year between January 28 and February 28.
