About This Organization

Head Start is a federally funded program, providing comprehensive services, including preschool, to primarily low-income 3 and 4 year old children. Head Start has been in existence for 42 years providing a safe healthy learning environment, a developmentally appropriate education, and nutritious meals to disadvantaged "at risk" children. Head Start has been in Plumas County, on the fairgrounds, for at least 30 years.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply

To enroll a child in a Head Start program contact the Head Start Program closest to you to arrange an appointment to complete an application. Head Start staff can come to your home to complete the application if needed. Calling 1-800-404-1242 will also connect you with a Head Start staff member who can assist you. When completing the application you will need to have a copy of the child's immunization record, and proof of family income. You can also contact us by filling in the information form and a Head Start staff member will contact you to complete an application.
