About This Organization

Head Start is a comprehensive pre-school program for children 3–5 years old that enriches a child’s learning experiences and prepares them for kindergarten and continued success in school.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply

How to EnrollTo enroll your pre-school child, you must firstcomplete an applicaion which can be mailedto you on request by calling SCAP’s Head Startoffice at 518-377-8539. Also, you may pick upan applicaion from the SCAP Head Start officeat 100 Bigelow Avenue, Schenectady or at SCAP’smain office at 913 Albany Street, Schenectady.For your applicaion to be processed, you mustsubmit the following documentaion:• proof of your child’s age(copy of birth cerificate)• proof of your family’s annual income:pay stubs from each parent for theprevious year, orcopy of SSI payment receipts, orcopy of current income tax return, orcopy of the payment receipt forunemployment insurance or disabilitypayments, andproof of any other income yourfamily receives.• For foster children, the only proof of incomerequired is documentaion of the sipendamount received from DSS or otherplacement agency.
