About This Organization

Head Start is a comprehensive program that serves children ages three to five and their families. It is a child-focused program with the overall goal of increasing the school readiness of young children in low-income families.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply

To enroll your child, please contact a Family Advocate at a site near you to see if you are eligible to receive Head Start services and to set an appointment to complete the necessary enrollment paperwork. You will be asked to verify your income by providing one of the following documents: • A copy of your most recent Individual Income Tax Form 1040, or • W-2 Forms, or • Three (3) consecutive pay stubs, or • Monthly public assistance check, or • Child Support checks, or • Foster Care checks, or • A copy of any other verification deemed necessary to determine eligibility • A signed statement from an employer on company letterhead You will also be asked to fill out a Pre-Enrollment form with the help of a Family Advocate, if necessary. We will need copies of the following: • Your child's immunization record • Your child's birth certificate • Your child's Social Security card • Your child's Medicaid card or priva
