Plaza’s Head Start Program was establish in 1965 and currently operates 25 centers, and 8 Family Child Care Providers strategically located in Los Angeles County, from East Los Angeles, North East to South East Los Angeles, and San Gabriel Valley. The Head Start Program offers; Education, Family Services, Health and Nutrition, Mental Health, Disabilities, and Parent Involvement, to more than 2000 children and their families. The program provides critical intervention in substance abuse, employment, literacy, and child care to eligible Head Start families. Our objective is to increase the access and effectiveness of existing service organizations and brining such services to families in targeted communities. Plaza de la Raza believes that providing such resources as education, training and information can reduce if not eliminate the cause or effect of poverty and helps alleviate the economic conditions of families.

Who is Eligible?
Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements.
Pregnant women and
children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and
families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for
services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be
eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some
grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines
as well.
