About This Organization

Head Start is a Federally funded program for low income and disadvantaged children. Head Start is a comprehensive child development program which serves children from 3 to 5, and their families. The Head Start Program delivers comprehensive high quality services designed to foster healthy development in low-income children. Head Start provides a range of individualized services in the areas of education and early childhood development; medical, dental, and mental health; nutrition; and parent involvement. In addition, the entire range of Head Start services is responsive and appropriate to each child's and family's developmental, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage and experience. Head Start programs must adhere to Program Performance Standards. They are designed to ensure that the Head Start goals and objectives are implemented successfully, that the Head Start philosophy continues to thrive, and that all grantee and delegate agencies maintain the highest possible quality in the provision of Head Start services. Plaquemines Parish Head Start student selection procedures comply with Federal Head Start Guidelines. Head Start actively recruits children with disabilities. Head Start does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or disability.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

Families are encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

The following documents are required: Proof of Income (the 1040 income tax form is preferred) Child’s Birth Certificate Parent and Child Social Security Card Drivers License Proof of Auto Insurance Child’s Medicaid Card 3 Proofs of Residency-MUST BE ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS; COPIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED Immunization (shot) Record Name and number for dentist and doctor. Name, number, and address for 3 emergency contacts. Benefit History for Food Stamps (if applicable) Evaluation or IEP (if applicable) Head Start can not accept incomplete packets. If you do not have all of the documents listed above, please call Vera Manuel at 595-6391 and she will help you obtain the documents needed.
