About This Organization

Head Start is a federally funded child development program designed to provide comprehensive services to preschool children from low-income families.Located at 1600 Rigsbee Drive, Plano ISD Head Start houses eight (8) developmentally appropriate Head Start classrooms. The program is governed by the Plano Independent School District and the Head Start Policy Council. The federal government provides funding. The District provides cash and in-kind services, including the facility maintenance and utilities. Federal law mandates that 20% of total funding must be received through in-kind donations from the school district and community.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply

There are three basic requirements for prospective students: The child must be three or four years old by September 1. The child must live within the boundaries of the Plano Independent School District.
