About This Organization

Head Start is a full day pre-school program for three, four and five year olds from low income families. It promotes the cognitive, physical, emotional, psychological and social development of children, including those with disabilities, and provides assistance to their families through educational, social, nutritional, health, disabilities, family partnership, transportation and transition services components. Staff members work closely with families and community agencies to meet the comprehensive needs of all children.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply

Application RequirementsThe following documents are needed to complete an application:1. Birth Certificate (must be 3 years old on or before September 1, 2009)2. Medicaid or Insurance Card3. Income Verification-Proof of total family income (For example, 2005 W2, Tax Return, DSS print-out, or letter form employer indicating salary for previous 12 months)4. Certificate of Immunization (No pink cards accepted)5. Social Security Cards (Parent & Child)6. Documentation of Child's Disability or Special Needs if condition has been diagnosed by a public agency and requires special education and related services with an Individualized Education Program (IEP), If Applicable.
