About This Organization

The mission of the Early Head Start program is to promote healthy prenatal outcomes for pregnant women, enhance the development of very young children, and promote healthy family functioning. EHS was created by the U.S. congress in the reauthorization of the Head Start Act in 1994 following the increased awareness of the importance of early brain development and the potential to make a lifelong impact on children who receive services in their most formative early years. Early Head Start offers a full array of Head Start services to children ad families based on the understanding of best practices for infants and toddlers. Early Head Start services are provided at two sites; the Susan Patricof Head Start Center and through a collaboration with a local mother/child residential treatment center. The treatment program is for dually diagnosed (MICA) women and one of their children under the age of three.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

Families are encouraged to apply.
