Head Start is a comprehensive child development program providing education, health, nutrition, and social services to families with children ages three to five years.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply

ApplicationsApplications are considered confidential and are to be treated in an appropriate manner. Applications include confidential financial, health and special needs information that should not be casually viewed.Applications are usually received at the main office in Arcata to the attention of the Enrollment Specialist.If application is incomplete (no shot dates, income verification or parent signature), it will be returned with a letter to the parent/guardian stating the information needed. A self-addressed/stamped envelope is included so the parent can mail back the completed application. If shot dates are not "up-to-date", the application will not be returned. The Incomplete Immunizations letter signifying which dates are missing is sent to the parent. Children need four (4) DPT, three (3) Polio, four (4) HIB, three (3) Hep B, one (1) MMR, or need to be up-to-date according to immunization schedule to attend Head Start/Early Head Start (see Health section).
