About This Organization

Head Start is a Federal program serving economically disadvantaged Birth through five-year-old children and families. It is a comprehensive child development program designed to enhance children's educational experiences, social-emotional development, physical development, language and communication abilities, and overall successful life experiences.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply

How do students enroll? Families enroll through a centralized application process. Applications available starting in April. Click HERE for a list of documents needed to register. REGISTRATION IS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. To make and appointment call 203-946-6950 or 946-6179. Applications and documents must be reviewed by NHPS personnel. NO APPLICATION WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL ALL DOCUMENTATION IS COMPLETE. Once all documents are in and registration is complete, families will receive notification of their child's specific school assignment over the summer. School assignments are based upon student's neighborhood locations and availability. Eligibility requirements do not change based upon site placement. When all Head Start programs are full, students are placed on a waiting list.
