Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

Families are encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

Enrollment:Applications are accepted year-round from families who meet the eligibility criteria. The Head Start program runs throughout the school year; Early Head Start runs year round. If classes are full, we will add your child’s name to a waiting list.To start the enrollment process, simply contact Early Head Start at (616) 453-4145, ext. 2288 or the Head Start location nearest you and schedule an appointment. During the appointment, a staff member will help you fill out the necessary paperwork. Please bring the following information with you:Proof of income (last year’s W-2, CDC, TANF, SSI, pay stubs)Proof of birth date for each child to be enrolled.
