About This Organization

The Head Start Program provides preschool educational services to children from low- to moderate- income families who are 3 to 4 years of age. Priority is given to children with special needs. Head Start is the most successful and longest operating national school readiness program in the United States. Our program serves 452 students and their families. The Lyn-CAG Head Start Program, organized since 1966, maintains collaborative and partnership alliances with the United Way’s Success by Six Program, Bedford County School System, Amherst County School System and Lynchburg City Schools. The agency operates twelve centers throughout the Central Virginia area.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

Families are encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

Eligibility:All clients must meet applicable income guidelines set forth by respective funding sources. Children must be 3 to 4 years of age. Intake Procedures:Unrestricted. Walk-ins accepted. Self-referrals accepted. Written Application required. Documentation:Birth Certificate of the child; Income Verification for the Household (can include check stubs).
