About This Organization

Head Start is a free federal program for preschool children ages 3-5 from low income families. The goal of Head Start is to develop the whole child: socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. These goals are accomplished through a well balanced program incorporating health, education, social service and parent involvement components. In each classroom, there is a degreed teacher and an assistant teacher along with approximately 18 children. Head Start believes all children can succeed when provided a safe and supportive environment. There are eight facilities in Lawrence County that house the Head Start program that offer a variety of program options. (part-year school-year, full-year and home based) They include Ben Franklin Early Learning Center, The Learning Tree Childcare & Preschool Center, Mohawk Elementary, Ellwood City Early Learning Center, East Lawrence Elementary, Pulaski Elementary, Northside Elementary and Hartman Elementary.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

Families are encouraged to apply.
