About This Organization

Head Start is a federal program that serves children up to the age of five, and pregnant women, from low-income families. Head Start helps prepare children for success in school through:EducationEarly childhood education;Services for children with disabilities.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply

EligibilityEligibility for Head Start is based upon local and federal income and child age requirements. Ten percent of Head Start enrollment is to serve children with special needs. Children with disabilities are integrated into the Head Start Program.To enroll a child in the Head Start program, the parent or guardian must:Contact the program.Apply to the program.Attend the program orientation.
