Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

Families are encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

An application is made available to anyone who requests one. Please contact one of our Family Service Workers - Angela Jerome 253-6596; Maria Burrows 253-6469; or Kelly Bowles 253-4717 if you would like an application sent to you. They are also available if any family needs assistance filling out an application. After the application is filled out and returned to Head Start, it is reviewed and determination is made whether the child is income eligible or over income. Initially, income eligible and parents of children with special needs are contacted and an intake interview is scheduled. At this time, the parent or guardian must provide proof of residency, proof of income, and a copy of the child's birth certificate. All parents/guardians are informed that each child must have a completed physical examination form and immunization record on file prior to entry. Families are also informed that there is no fee for the Head Start program.
