About This Organization

Head Start is a federally funded comprehensive child development program that serves income eligible children ages 3 to 5 and their families. The DesMoines Head Start program is a delegate of the Drake University Head Start program and serves over 400 children.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

Families are encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

Head StartWe will begin taking Head Start applications on February 25, 2011 for the 2011-2012 school year. Head Start is a federally funding preschool program for income eligible families. You may call the Welcome Center at 242-7588 or 242-7234 to schedule an appointment to complete a Head Start application. The child’s birth certificate and proof of income will be required at the time of application.
