About This Organization

Head Start is a comprehensive child development program that serves children from ages three until five, and their families. The Ascension Parish Head Start Program is licensed as a day care program and therefore meets the minimum requirements established by the state for a Class A license.The Head Start Program is administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the Administration on Children, Youth and Families (ACYF), and the Office of Head Start (OHS). The Ascension Parish School Board is the recipient of the grant awarded to Ascension Parish.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply

Eligibility, Recruitment, and Selection of Students into Head Start A. PURPOSE:Head Start Performance Standards (1305.3; 1305.4; 1305.5; 1305.6; 1305.7; 1305.8; 1305.9) state the requirements for determining community needs and recruitment areas. These contain requirements and procedures for the eligibility determination, recruitment, selection, enrollments and attendance of children in Head Start programs. In carrying out this responsibility, the grantee has set as its primary objective for recruitment that of providing the maximum number of needy, eligible children with the Head Start experience before they enter kindergarten. Since the grantee cannot serve all eligible children, it is felt that priorities for recruitment must be established. In addition, recruitment must be carried out in such a way as to minimize personal bias.
