About This Organization

Head Start• Comprehensive preschool development program for children ages 3-5 from income-eligible families• Child centered approach to learning with a focus on school readiness in the areas of language and literacy, math and science• Values parents as a child's first and most important teacher• Dental, vision, hearing, nutritional, and developmental screenings and follow-up for all children• Partnerships with parents to access resources in the community• Licensed facilities in Fort Kent, Fort Fairfield, Caribou, Mars Hill, Dyer Brook, Houlton, and Presque Isle offer traditional Head Start four days per week, three hours per day during the school year• Full day/full year programs are available to income-eligible families who are working or going to school in Houlton, Fort Kent, Presque Isle and Caribou• Meals are provided to children attending the program

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.
