About This Organization

Head Start promotes school readiness for 270 preschool children from low-income families living in the city of Alexandria through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social, and other services.

Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply

Head Start Registration Registration and Enrollment Information Head Start Registration is held in mid-March of each year. All low-income families and families of children with special needs living in Alexandria are invited to register. Children are accepted into Head Start based on income eligibility and the needs of the family, and are ranked according to a point system (link to point system document) to ensure that the children of families with the most need are served by the program. If a family who qualifies for Head Start services (based on income eligibility and need) is not accepted due to limited space in the program, they will be offered a space on the waiting list (based on point ranking) for that year. Head Start endeavors to serve families on the waiting list as space permits. The Enrollment Fair for all new and returning children is held in mid-June of each year.
