Who is Eligible?

Head Start generally serves children ages 3 to 5 who meet local eligibility requirements. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply

HOW TO ENROLL Children must be four or five on or before September 1 to enroll in preschool or kindergarten, respectively. State law mandates that children ages five to seventeen must be in school. Parents who choose not to send their child to a public or private school must sign a waiver to that effect. Waiver forms are available at the district administrative office. Parents who plan to enroll their child in any grade are asked to do so as soon as possible. School offices are open year round for registration. Upon registration, parents are required to provide school personnel with the child's official birth certificate, proof of residence, and immunization records. All children are required to be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, mumps, chicken pox, red and German measles, and hepatitis.
